I remember when I was younger I watched this, not understanding everything. All I could remember was Maria being a nun then becoming a nanny, singing with the kids and then falling in love with the dad. I watched it again not too long ago and I was like wtf. Suddenly theyre on the run from the nazis. Like wtf? And I felt so betrayed when that little shmuck betrayed his girlfriend like that.

For my grandma whos birthday is today. Shes somewhere over the rainbow

Vincente MInnelli's masterpiece of reminiscence is much the better for its acute awareness of its own time: made when America's wartime involvement was at its height (1944) the film yearns for refuge in a simpler time and finds it at the turn of the century in a growing but still youthful (the streets are yet to be paved) Midwestern city. Minnelli's mastery of editing to coax complicated feelings from his performers is exquisite, particularly in long, gliding takes that completely envelope the audience as the characters experience emotional peaks (falling in love) and valleys (the threat of being uprooted from home) which are then broken through cross-cutting to discuss them. Made with a genuine appreciation for hearth and home, the film ostensibly features Judy Garland; but Minnelli seamlessly incorporates her into his large cast, and also allows ample room for complex performances from the wonderful Leon Ames, Mary Astor and, in the pivotal role of the youngest daughter Tootie, the sublime Margaret O'Brien. Not just a great musical- a great work of art.

This movie is one of the true highlights of the Arthur Freed Unit at MGM! It utilizes so many great talents. The incredible songs by Hugh Martin and Ralph Blane are so beautiful and joyous! The performances by Judy Garland and Margaret O' Brien are amazing. Vincente Minnelli gives the movie his own distinct directorial style. The movie is almost like a moving painting of the life of the Smith family. The core of the movie though is Judy. She grabs you from the very beginning and holds onto you till the very end. She is absolutely breathtakingly beautiful in very scene she steps into. This family classic is high on my list and absolutely recommended to everyone who loves great entertainment.

Watched this with my father, one Xmas we got a book SingALong wMitch & would recreate a show with my siblings. She was wonderful in this film. Marvelous flick. Thanks for posting it.

This is one of my favorite movies. The songs are excellent. How anyone could go past The Trolley Song or Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas is beyond me.
Set in 1904 just prior to the World's Fair coming to St Louis, it shows the importance of family, and that the pursuit of money/status is not the aim of people, as represented by the move to New York and living in an apartment as opposed to a large (several generations old) family home in a 'small' city.
The best scenes in the movie (apart from the aforementioned songs) are the Halloween scene which (if you see it from the child's viewpoint) are what scary is all about; and the scene when the girls are preparing for the dance and planning their assault on the eligible boys to keep 'that Lucille Ballard' unattached.
Loved the tying of the corsets, which shows women's fashion has NEVER been based on being comfortable.
Perfect to watch at Christmas time or when you're feeling depressed.

Meet me in stLouis = fu* ing incredible. That song it is so beautiful... Shes so sarcastic in this I love. @MousseMooseROCKS and a lot of luck. Tears me up, because the Mother is saying, don't worry dear, we will do what we need to to take care of this family. Even the act of tranposing it down to his range at the beginning speaks volumes: I or you alone can do this, but if we work together, we can make it even more beautiful.

Qué divertida se ve esa epoca. Ah yes, the days before Cultural-Bolshevism completely destroyed our society... take me back. Tradition is the future.

I just saw the play today.
